Here are two European insights on current developments in the price of oil. One is from Barclays and the other by Chris Skrebowski who maintains a list of global oil fields under development (megaprojects) and edits Petroleum Review. The reports are in close agreement.
The Oil and Gas Journal (2/11/08) reported [...]
I've been considering adding either Joy Global (JOYG) or Bucyrus (BUCY)

Ethanol stocks plummeted Thursday due to Wednesday's news of corn shooting up 14 cents and Bush finally showing concern over corn-ethanol.
The other day I stumbled across a couple of funds that trade in Canada that on the surface are quite intriguing.

As the price of a barrel of oil reaches new record high, there are two distinct groups of thought: one group asserting that the price of a barrel of oil will go to $125 by the end of 2008, and the other asserting that the price of a barrel of [...]

With oil up $5 yesterday and reaching new record highs, we calculated the commodity's performance from its lows this decade and compared it to the performance of other assets. As shown below, oil is now up 528% from its low in November 2001! Yes, 528%.

Allis-Chalmers Energy (ALY) formally announced their Q4 and full year
earnings. Things were pretty much as they said they would be back on
January 31 when they presented their preliminary unaudited results for
2007.
Here are the final numbers:
Canadian Solar (CSIQ) reported a very nice 4Q '07 Wednesday. Although CSIQ had previously guided to expected 4Q revenues of $110 to $120 million, it actually reported $127.5 million in sales despite having lost about 5 megawatts of production due to the severe weather in China recently.

The financing deal announced by China North East Petroleum (CNEH.OB) on March 3rd is much better than I anticipated in my January 31st article.
Here are today's biggest stories surrounding the sector:
- The combination of March corn climbing 14 cents and March ethanol falling 4.6 cents caused ethanol's crush spread to drop 27 cents today to $1.02. Corn prices shot up as a result of oil's $5 run.

I've cut back my solar exposure quite heavily in the past month, but still hold my long suffering Trina Solar (TSL) - one of the fund's two largest losers from inception.

EnerNOC (NASDAQ:ENOC) got killed yesterday following weaker than expected results and there may be some more downside eary on as Jeffco is out downgrading their rating to Hold from Buy this morning (target goes to $18 from $54). Yet we have some interesting defenses out as well, which indicate [...]
What does a small oil producer do when local selling prices are temporarily low and inventories are growing? Well if the company is Continental Resources (CLR), it will scavenge around to find storage facilities and sit on the oil until prices come back in line. This is exactly the [...]
China Solar & Clean Energy Solutions, Inc. (CSOL.OB) provides solar hot water heaters and coal fired residential boilers in the People’s Republic of China [PRC], primarily in rural areas.
Over the past several weeks we’ve seen a tremendous surge in all

Despite all the difficulties facing the ethanol industry -- such as shrinking margins, canceled plants, environmental concerns and even a study suggesting an ethanol fire is harder to extinguish than a gasoline fire -- Rob Romero, a managing partner at Connective Capital, still thinks biofuel investments are worth [...]
LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) might have thought its problems were over in December, when an independent audit cleared it of allegations that it misstated its silicon inventory (see Independent LDK Audit Finds No Material Errors).
With crude above $100, and an overbought commodity situation
across the agriculture and energy ETF space, a pullback is all but imminent in the
short term.

Oceaneering International (OII) ($65.56 at the close)
On a reported basis the company missed by 1 penny in the 4Q. Ok, that's out of the way. However, the "miss" was due to some well above consensus numbers skewing the EPS estimate for the quarter. For the same group of analysts, OII beat [...]
Oilexco [TSX:OIL, LSE:OIL, OTCBB:OILXF.PK], has become a bit of a Canadian hydrocarbon darling of late, morphing gracefully from junior explorer into mid-tier producer. The disciplined and methodical deployment of capital that has become the company’s trademark have got both individual and institutional investors smugly satisfied with the share price [...]
Crude oil reached a record high on Tuesday, and there's an embarrassing oversupply of theories to explain why.
Some opine that the oil market is still on edge over Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' decision to cut off sales of crude, gasoline, and diesel to ExxonMobil. But this is old [...]
It seems that the market does not want to recognize the true value in ConocoPhillips (COP), despite its strong fundamentals, solid financial & operational results and the fact that Buffett and Soros believe in their prospects.

Research reports (.pdf, Spanish) have Cuba holding the raw materials to make 2 to 3 billion (.pdf, Spanish) gallons of ethanol a year. The problem? They lack the capital to make it happen. Either of these amounts would vault the tiny nation into 3rd place on the global stage [...]
Yesterday’s market got spooked in the morning with the release of
consumer price index data showing a more than expected 0.4% rise for

A significant problem with ethanol is that it corrodes current pipelines due to its solubility in water. This makes it difficult to transport the fuel long distances as this is a hurdle the industry desperately needs to overcome.

Like my
#6 pick Sharp (SHCAY.PK), Applied Materials (AMAT) provides
investors a way to profit from the spectacular growth of the solar industry
without the incredible volatility of the solar sector. Unlike Sharp,
however, AMAT is farther up the value chain, supplying technology and equipment
to Solar manufacturers.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think a disciplined investor should focus on earnings and intrinsic values rather than market quotes. So it is because of their recently reported earnings that I am disappointed with Dawson Geophysical (NASD: DWSN). After last quarter, I estimated full year proforma earnings for Dawson prior [...]
I don't write frequently about solar stocks, especially photovoltaic [PV] manufacturers. While the industry is almost certain to be a spectacular growth story, it's also a story that everyone already seems to know about. Trader Mark put it well: "these stocks are too driven by retail hands." The PV story clicks [...]

The U.S. and Venezuela are fighting in the schoolyard again, though the latest tiff is actually being duked out by oil companies as government proxies.
With a softening North American market as a backdrop, Nabors Industries (NBR) reported 4th quarter 2007 earnings that were off compared to a year ago.

Over the weekend Exxon Mobil succeeded in getting a British Court to freeze assets that were seized last year by Venezuela’s state-run oil company. Monday morning, Venezuelan “President” Hugo Chavez vowed to cut off oil supply to the US if the British Court injunction of $12 billion in assets [...]

Buy-recommended San Juan Basin Royalty Trust (SJT) offers pure concentration on natural gas selling at half price, judging by the incremental price of liquefied natural gas in Asia.
